Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

  1. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements
  4. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  6. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. To be informed whether those seeing donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  9. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  10. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Non-Profits. It has been endorsed by numerous organizations.

Walk the Plank – use of pier as catwalk makes Maritime Centre shine

July 31st, 2010 by robynquinn 4 comments »

Thursday July 29 was the very first Cowichan Bay fashion event to support the Ahoy! building campaign.

Cowichan Wooden Boat Society member Julie Salisbury provided a lively commentary for the line-up of beautiful clothes provided by Patryka Designs in Mill Bay and Victoria based designer Vanessa of Isadora Clothing. All pictures courtesy of CWBS member and photog Rachel Penney. Special guest and surprise runway chaperone, Capn Jack Sparrow,  was played perfectly by our friend Denise Pearson.

Thanks go out to Island Savings for selling tickets.

Ladies and a few guys, enjoyed delicious appies including some mouthwatering Epicure treats from the BBQ. Lew Penney and Lynn Woodgate helped Epicure rep Mildred prepare elegant grilled veggies, fresh papaya salsa and spicy chicken

Creamy blue cheese and soft cheese  supplied by Hilary’s Cheese were partnered with roasted pecans and sliced baguette from True Grain Breads – and disappeared fast!

Wine and soft drinks were served from 5 pm until 8 and our bartender was one of the lovely Dragonboat Diva volunteers who also manned raffle and ticket sales, set-up and clean up details. Our sincere thanks to this wonderful group – they are  hosted by the Maritime Centre along with having their boat moored here.

Prizes were donated by:

Epicure (Mildred Wooton), Merridale Cider, Prospect Winery?BC Wine Guys, Robyn Quinn, Herb Rice,Cowichan Oceanview Bed & Breakfast, Suzan Lagrove, Patryka Designs, Isadora Clothing, CB Maritime Centre.

The show was a hit – thanks to Patty and Vanessa who generously donated time and talent to provide the dresses and help the newbie models make magic!

All of our models were volunteers and we were lucky to have such a great group helping us out-thank you :-)

Here are more highlights of the show:

Shaw TV was on hand as well to film the show and talk to us about the Ahoy! Campaign.

We had a lot of fun and hope everyone will join us again next year!

Artist vision of the new Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre

What do you think? The artistic license removed some power poles but overall the effect is stunning.

Based on preliminary plans - our new centre will make a shining addition to the streetscape

Stories of the Bay – for the new centre – got one?

June 30th, 2010 by robynquinn No comments »

Building a new maritime centre in Cowichan Bay is not just about protecting artifacts, pictures and books – its also about remembering the people who lived and worked here. We’d like to include stories about the people who created the history of Cowichan Bay. Was your grandfather the best fiddle player? Did one of your ancestors build the first store? Did you propose to your spouse here?

Please share with us – we hope to keep alive the voices of those who made this beautiful little community their home.

Post your story here or let me know you’d like to talk to us and I will set up an interview.

Pirates and Chowder Highlights of the Wooden Boat Festival

June 23rd, 2010 by robynquinn No comments »

Congratulations to the Bay Pub – winner of the coveted “Best Chowder” contest which was decided by hundreds of very fussy chowder lovers this past weekend. There was music, a few impromptu dances and general maritime mayhem so overall – a success!

The staff and volunteers worked very hard to make the event memorable for everyone – send a note or write a letter to the paper to thank them – goes a long way :-)

Check out the 8 minute highlights video – we talked to visitors and documented some of the activities. Please comment and let us know if we can improve.

25th Cowichan Bay Wooden Boat Festival offered full day of fun

June 21st, 2010 by robynquinn No comments »

I had no eye patch or spyglass and my parrot was MIA but I felt right at home strolling the colourful street and docks of Cowichan Bay this Saturday.

Great pirate costumes made judging the best very difficult this year

Well, it was a very busy day for volunteers, vendors, chowder tasters and assorted pirates. The 2010 festival missed a few notes – no Fast and Furious Boat Building event this year and a few junior fishers were disappointed that they couldn’t angle for a prize – but hit the mark on all the rest of the fun activities.

Bobby the safety boat was chatting away with kids of all sizes in the lot beside the Rock Cod Cafe -  volunteers gave him his voice…and personality too!

Meanwhile Maritime Centre student interns Scott and Kara, dramatically decked out in pirate garb, watched over junior shipwrights who created some pretty amazing wooden boats to take home. Not often you see purple feathers on mastheads. You could tell how popular this turned out to be just watching a steady stream of giddy kids clutching their masterpieces. I think I saw Cap’n  Jack Sparrow give one splendid catamaran a very longing glance.

Wooden boats had arrived Friday night to start the socializing and were moored at various docks – one of the festival favourites was the Oriole – the Canadian Navy’s high profile ambassador welcomed at hundreds of community events. Since this year marks the 100th birthday of the navy having such a special guest was even more appropriate at this celebration of everything maritime.

After chatting with neighbours and visitors it seemed like the highlight of the day was the chance to taste and vote on the nine chowders along the Bay. Competition was fierce but the winner was the creamier version offered up by the Bay Pub.

Entertainment was another great feature – musicians and performers were stationed at several businesses and stages all day. One very energetic group stole the hearts of everyone at Bo’s

Volunteer Leadership – See yourself at the helm?

June 21st, 2010 by robynquinn No comments »

The Cowichan bay Maritime Centre Building Campaign needs a chair – this is a volunteer position where you can help the society meet a goal of raising $750,000 to repair the existing pier and pods and build a brand new museum – with a community room, library and gift shop. You’ll have the support of Robyn Quinn (Campaign Director) and Suzan LaGrove (Executive Director) and of course the members of the Cowichan Wooden Boat Society as well as the many friends in the community.

You’ll need some time to carry out some of the activities, have a good understanding of the community and how important the new centre can be, feel comfortable talking to media and to leaders in business, government and the community.

We’ll have some fun with special events and visits to potential donors and you will have an opportunity to make real contributions to the directions we take. The first milestone is in place for this fall – raise $140,000 to meet criteria for federal and provincial funding.

Call Robyn at 250-220-4750 to learn more

It’s Official! The campaign starts now!

News Release

Ahoy! – New Maritime Centre Announced for Cowichan Bay

COWICHAN BAY WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL, JUNE 19 – Great things on the horizon for fans of all things nautical, from wooden boats to pirates, as a new Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre is going to be built. The announcement was made today at the 25th Annual CB Wooden Boat Festival. Although the existing  Maritime Centre is popular with visitors to the Vancouver Island coastal community, our facility needs to expand to meet growing visitor demands and to bring out of storage donated artifacts currently stowed away. The Cowichan Wooden Boat Society (CWBS) members are committed to building not just a facility but a cultural centrepiece for the community. CWBS President Lew Penney said, “Our goal is to preserve the region’s maritime history for future generations, visitors not only experience maritime tradition first hand, they have fun. Residents receive a beautiful addition to our streetscape and an expanded community meeting place.”

Ahoy! Is the name of the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre building campaign with aims to raise $750,000 in order to complete the building in 2012. Along with expanded display and workshop areas and a fully operational maritime library – a new community room will be available for local groups to use.

Visit http://www.classicboats.org/ for details about how to donate or volunteer, the progress of our new centre, events and donor benefits. Media tours, photo ops and interviews can be arranged.

The Cowichan Wooden Boat Society preserves and presents the heritage of British Columbia’s Maritime past, as it relates to Cowichan Bay, through community events, wooden boat building classes and historic displays at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre. Formerly an oil facility, the Maritime Centre was built in 1988 with the pods and pier extending approximately 82 meters into Cowichan Bay. Over 10,000 visitors tour the Centre annually.
