Herb Rice

Herb RiceHerb Rice is our artist-in-residence. He is a Coast Salish Artist, native to the Cowichan area. His carvings in yellow and red cedar, alder and pine, explore traditional Salish and Kwakuitl designs as well as more modern concepts.
Herb's intention is to combine the richness of his heritage with a more contemporary approach to art making. His works for the past 18 years have reflected the teachings of his people in the Cowichan Region.

Herb can be found most days at his studio in the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre, surrounded by works in progress.  Many similar pieces are in homes around the world, in Europe, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A. and Canada.

Herb offers carving classes twice a year (in March and in October) at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre.
