Pier restoration underway, june 10th, 2018

The Pier Rehabilitation Project officially began on June 10, 2018. Eight new steel pilings and piling caps were added under the wharf head by Pacific Industrial & Marine, the area under the B.C. Supercargoes Pavilion. These pilings will last for the foreseeable future and help to keep the pier stable as we move towards the many other areas of the pier that require rehabilitation.
Next steps for pier rehabilitation include additional bracing under the wharf head and new pilings, piling caps, and bracing along the 89-metre pier approach. After that, new railings the extent of the entire pier are required to keep the pier safe for public use. Please consider supporting this project with a donation. By donating to the project fund, you will help preserve the iconic maritime heritage pier in Cowichan Bay for generations to come.

Project Plan

  • The BC Ministry of Forests Lands & Natural Resources, Cowichan Estuary Restoration and Conservation Association and the Cowichan Estuary Environmental Management Committee have established environmental protocols for piling replacement.

  • Steel pilings, which are safer for the environment, will replace the creosote pilings found to be in poor condition.

Community Service

  • The Pier promotes the area’s maritime heritage and is an important tourist attraction.

  • The structure hosts many Cowichan area celebrations, meetings, maritime recreation and educational presentations for groups and individuals including our annual wooden boat festival (now in its 35th year), North America’s first “Cittaslow” community and the Cowichan Valley Dragon Divas dragon boat team.

  • In 2015, the Cowichan Valley Regional District added the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre's pier to its heritage registry.
